Frequently asked questions on volunteering at the library:

• How do I become a volunteer at the library ?

  If you are interested in volunteering at the Library, please call Anna Elola, Volunteer Coordinator of Washington Hospital at (510) 797-1111 ext. 3465 or view additional information on volunteer opportunities at the Library and the Hospital.

   

• What do volunteers do at the library ?

  Volunteers primarily assist patrons in their research needs. Whether it is helping a patron find the book they are looking for or assisting with a computer search.  Volunteers help make library patron's visit a successful one.  Volunteers also provide osteoporosis screening to patrons and assist in new program development and other special projects.

   

• What would be my minimum hourly commitment ?

  Library volunteers are asked to volunteer a minimum of two shifts per month. Each shift is either two or three hours long depending on the time of day you choose to volunteer.

   

• What requirements do you have of volunteers ?

  Volunteers need to have an outgoing, caring personality and the ability to interact with a variety of individuals. No prior library or research skills are required.  Library volunteers must be at least 15.5 years old and have a sophomore standing.

   

• What training is provided ?

  Because we are a hospital facility accredited by the JCAHO, all volunteers must first complete a mandatory safety orientation before they can begin to staff a volunteer assignment. These safety orientations are held twice a month, once on a Monday and once on a Saturday.
  After you complete your safety orientation, you will be given one-on-one training at the Library on how to assist patrons. This includes research techniques, computer training and a variety of other skills.
